Need help estimating? Business miles per working day x days worked:

Check before you claim. These are the flat rates for simplified expenses, for self-employed people. GOV.UK says you use the flat rate instead of the actual costs of buying and running your vehicle, such as insurance, repairs, servicing and fuel. This is an estimate, not tax advice. Check GOV.UK or ask an accountant.

How it is calculated

Cars and vans: (first 10,000 business miles x 55p) + (miles over 10,000 x 25p). Motorcycles: all business miles x 24p.

The rates come from GOV.UK: simplified expenses for vehicles (read 28 October 2026). Before 6 April 2026 the first 10,000 miles were 45p. Always check GOV.UK for the latest figures.

Common questions

What is the HMRC mileage rate for 2026-27?

For simplified expenses, GOV.UK lists 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a car or goods vehicle in the 2026-27 tax year, then 25p per mile. Before 6 April 2026 the first 10,000 miles were 45p.

What is the rate for motorcycles?

GOV.UK lists 24p per mile for motorcycles, before and after 6 April 2026.

How is 12,000 miles worked out?

In 2026-27: 10,000 miles x 55p = £5,500, plus 2,000 miles x 25p = £500, so £6,000 in total.

Can I claim fuel and repairs as well?

GOV.UK says the flat rate is used instead of the actual costs of buying and running your vehicle, for example insurance, repairs, servicing and fuel.
